Your first shave. How did it happen?

by Craig Maltby for Club LT

What was your first shave like? How did you start shaving?

I started shaving around age 13. And not because I was a heavily whiskered adolescent.

I thought shaving would be the coolest thing. Maybe it was the yesteryear version of getting your first tattoo.

By shaving, I would then be totally justified in splashing on after shave, which would attract the girls, no doubt. What chick doesn’t melt at the scent of cheap drug-store cologne.

And I’d heard that if I start shaving at my peach fuzz stage, that peach fuzz would soon transition into real whiskers. Which would be nirvana for me because then I could grow mutton chop sideburns. All my rock music heroes had huge sideburns then. So did the guys at school who possessed more testosterone than I. I had to emulate them. Had to, I tell ya.

So I started shaving using my dad’s electric razor. Years later, I moved to a twin-blade safety razor, which seemed to treat my skin better (via shave cream) and gave me a closer shave.

Yes, fathers—and rock stars—influence your shaving life. I watched my dad shave from time to time, knowing someday I’d harness the life-changing power of that electric razor.

Years later, my young daughters would watch me shave with my double blade. One day I was piddling around the house looking for one of my kids, who was around 3 years old at the time. I found her in my bathroom. She had climbed up on the counter, sitting by the sink.  She had my razor in her little hand, staring in the mirror at her bloody chin. I laughed and freaked at the same time. She was dazed. She didn’t know shaving was so hazardous.

Like father like daughter.

We’ve got more first shave stories from guys who blog. It was our tribute to dad during this past Father’s Day. Lucky Tiger wants to capture more of these stories. LT has been around since the 1930s. We’ve got a long, rich history and want to keep that history going!

Give us a little of your history. Or tell us how you are guiding your son as he starts his shaving journey. We’d love to hear it. Leave a comment on the Lucky Tiger Facebook page. Or in the comment box below.  And let the Lucky Tiger Liquid Cream Shave or even the Lucky Tiger Essential Grooming Kit be a part of that journey.

And one tip: child-proof your razor drawer.
